How to Apply for a Student Loan

Student loans are an important financial resource that helps students pay for their educational needs. Although the application process for financial aid is intended to be straightforward, the ordeal can be quite overwhelming. Here are some steps you can take in order to apply for a student loan:

Visit the FAFSA website (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Be sure that you have all the necessary documents to apply. Such as your tax information and school code.

After you've submitted the application wait for your Student Aid Report. An award letter should be sent to your address on file. The letter explains your eligibility for financial aid. Be sure to review the report for accuracy.

Apply for a federal student loan. The most popular federal loans for students is the Stafford Loan. FFELP and FDSLP loans are variations of the Stafford Loan. You can apply for the loan online if you wish, however you will receive a promissory note that must be signed and mailed.

You may also choose to apply for further student loans from private institutions. The best way to find them is online or by contacting your local lenders.

Manage your funds wisely. The Stafford Loan will go directly towards your tuition, and any money left over will be handed to you in the form of a check. These funds can be used for books and/or living costs.
